The Birth of Bank Trailer Security Systems LLC

In my area, as in many other areas, trailers are being stolen daily. So, when I purchased a large enclosed trailer and wanted a reliable, robust way of locking my trailer to prevent theft, I started searching for a trailer coupler lock. I quickly discovered that there was nothing on the market that checked all the boxes that I wanted in a coupler lock.

Most locks are made of cast aluminum, pot metal, or thin sheet steel and can be easily removed from the coupler by hammering or prying off. Being a retired engineer with over 30 years of experience, I decided to design my own. I wanted a lock that could not be removed from the coupler by any means of hammering or prying, and would be very difficult to grind or cut off.

Accessible Trailer and Hitch Locks

It was also important to be user-friendly. I didn’t want to have to assemble and disassemble the lock each time I wanted to use it, as some “high-security” locks were made. I also didn’t want to get on my knees to insert the key in the lock, as many locks have the key pointing down. With this criterion in mind, I designed a lock that incorporated all these features. I designed the one-piece housing with a ¼” steel plate and the locking pin from ¾” x 1 ¾” steel, the largest and strongest in the industry.

The padlock was designed to be completely contained inside the housing, preventing any access for tampering. All the components are interlocked, so there are no loose parts to keep track of or lose. The key location is on the front for easy access, no need to squat or kneel down to unlock or lock. All my locks can be installed and removed with one hand in as little as 10 seconds, providing a handicap-friendly design. I had three trailers, so I built a lock for each trailer. When my son’s came over, they saw the locks and wanted some for their trailers. So, I built locks for their trailers. Friends and neighbors saw the locks and wanted to know where they could get a lock like that, so I built them a lock.

Secure Design

It never occurred to me to start a company to offer these locks to the public until one of our neighbors had his trailer stolen at 3:00 in the morning. He heard the thieves pull out of his driveway. He quickly got dressed and chased the thieves and caught up with them. When he confronted them, they shot and killed him. That devastated me, thinking that if he had one of my locks on his trailer, he would be alive today. At that moment, I decided to start a company to offer these locks to the public, and that was the beginning of Bank Trailer Security Systems LLC.

We offer a full line of High-Security locks for most trailer coupler types and industry-first accessories, such as storage brackets to secure your lock to the trailer when not connected to the coupler, and Hitch lock protectors to prevent your hitch from being removed from your vehicle.
