What Should You Look for When Buying a Trailer Coupler Lock?
If you are considering buying a trailer coupler lock, there are several key factors to consider before making a purchase. Are you looking for something inexpensive that may deter a casual thief, or a high-security lock that physically prevents theft and cannot be removed without tremendous effort and specialized tools?
Ask yourself:
- Is this lock going to provide true security for my trailer?
- Will it hold up to sledgehammer strikes and pry bar attacks?
- Will it work in severe weather conditions?
- How easy is it to install and remove?
What to Look for in a High-Security Trailer Coupler Lock
If you want something inexpensive, you’ll find plenty of options at big-box stores like Walmart or home improvement centers. However, if you want real protection, you’ll need to look for high-security trailer coupler locks, available online or at professional trailer dealers.
When evaluating high-security locks for quality, pay attention to:
- Construction & Material Strength. Is it made of a strong material, steel or aluminum? Steel is much more resistant to aggressive attacks with a hammer or pry bar.
- Thickness. Is it thick enough not to deform when struck by a sledgehammer or attacked by a pry bar? Many lock housings are 1/8”- 3/16” steel that can deform under aggressive attacks. Locks using ¼” steel will resist these attacks and retain their structural integrity.
- Weather Resistance. How will the lock perform in various weather conditions? Will the lock retain water, or is the lock designed to shed and drain water without pooling? This is especially important during the winter months. A frozen lock cannot be easily removed.
- Ease of Use. How easy is the lock to install and remove? Is the lock made of multiple pieces that have to be assembled on the trailer coupler, using both hands, and then reassembled when it is removed? This can be challenging to do while standing and often results in squatting or getting on your knees. Not very desirable if you are wearing nice clothes or the conditions are muddy or dirty. Most high-security locks fall into this category.
Additional Factors to Consider:
- Key Location. Does the key point up, down, forward, or backwards? All coupler locks that use the puck lock have the key pointing down. This can be awkward to use, often requiring you to get on your knees to look under the coupler, to see where to place the key, or fumble with the key and get the lock disks out of sequence, adding additional aggravation in trying to unlock the coupler lock.
- Weight. How much does the lock weigh? There are locks on the market that weigh 25lbs or more. Some manufacturers think that using a lot of heavy material makes their product appear more robust. Where it does make it heavier, it does very little to improve the security of the lock. If NASA used this theory, rockets would never get off the ground. Strong material in a well-designed configuration provides the same level of robustness at a fraction of the weight.
A well-designed steel coupler lock balances strength, usability, and protection without unnecessary weight.
Why Bank Trailer Security Systems Locks Stand Above the Rest
Trailer coupler locks from Bank Trailer Security Systems LLC have addressed each of these concerns in their designs, plus adding additional features that make their locks stand above the rest, including:
- One-piece housing – ¼” P&O steel material, no hinges or assembly required
- Locking pin material – ¾” x 1 ¾” steel
- Cross gusseting design provides maximum strength with minimal material weight. Typically, 7-9 lbs.
- Water shedding design with drain openings, eliminating any possibility of water pooling,
- Interlock design. All components of the lock are interconnected, no loose parts to misplace, assemble, or lose. This eliminates loose parts requiring assembly during installation and removal. (Only one piece to keep track of)
- Requires only one hand to install and remove in less than 10 seconds, no kneeling required
- Tamper-proof design with padlock and locking pin completely contained in the housing, eliminating any possibility of tampering and protected from the weather
- Key location is facing forward for easy access, no kneeling or straining to find the key opening
- Master Lock Commercial grade padlock with “Bump-Stop” technology, making it almost impossible to pick
- Optional Onboard storage bracket to mount on your trailer tongue, providing a safe, secure, readily available location to store your lock when not attached to your trailer coupler
